Forgotten Memories

Sixth grade. Two words that can evoke a mix of emotions: excitement, trepidation, and for some, outright dread. For me, it was a whirlwind of changes, challenges, and unexpected growth. It was a year marked by constant internal battles. The world around me seemed to be speeding up, while I felt stuck in slow motion. Friendships shifted, academic pressures mounted, and self-doubt crept in like an unwelcome guest. It felt like everyone else had figured out the middle school code, while I was still trying to decipher the instructions. I remember countless nights spent staring at the ceiling, replaying every awkward interaction, every missed opportunity, and every harsh word. It was a lonely and isolating experience, and at times, I felt like I was drowning in a sea of insecurities. Looking back, I realize that these challenges were not unique to me. Everyone goes through their version of sixth-grade turmoil. It’s a time of self-discovery, and it’s okay to feel lost along the way.

Which brings me to this letter to my younger self:

Hi Marc,

You don’t know me, but I know you. Despite the countless names and personalities you’ve used to hide yourself, I know who you are. I know life feels overwhelming right now. The world seems big and intimidating, and you’re trying to find your place in it. You don’t have to tell yourself who or what you have to be. It’s okay to feel confused, scared, and even a little lost. You’re going to make mistakes, and that is perfectly normal. Every bump in the road is a chance to learn and grow.

Remember that everyone is fighting their own battle. You’re not alone in feeling this way. Please reach out to someone you trust: a parent, a teacher, or a friend. Talking about your feelings can make a world of difference.

I know it’s hard to see right now, but these challenges are shaping you into the person you’re meant to be. They’re building resilience, empathy, and strength. You are capable of doing amazing things. In fact, you are reading this letter because you went through all these challenges.

Trust the process. Everything happens for a reason. Things that hurt now will eventually make you stronger. Hang in there. Better days are coming.

All my love,

Marc

Writing this letter has been a cathartic experience. It’s a message not only to my past self, but to all current and future youth that are slowly growing to see the real world. It’s a reminder that while I can’t change the past, I can learn from it and share my story in the hopes of helping others. If you’re going through a tough time, remember that you’re not alone. Reach out for support, be kind to yourself, and believe in your potential. The future is full of possibilities, and you have the power to create the life you want. Remember that every step you take, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goals. Embrace each new day with an open heart and a courageous spirit. The journey ahead is full of promise, and you are more capable than you realize.
