Piece of My Mind

Have you ever wanted to give somebody a piece of your mind but couldn’t because you didn’t want to come off as disrespectful ??? Hi,my name is Ari’yanna Clinton. I’m currently 14 years old and today I will be telling you my love for writing, how I started writing and my overall journey as a writer. My passion for writing began at the end of 6th grade. My teacher assigned the class an assignment based on a poem. The assignment was to read a poem and try to interpret what the author is trying to tell readers. I sat and stared at my paper thinking “what does this poem mean ?” .I was so confused because there were words I had never seen before and a form of writing I had yet to be introduced to until this very moment. We worked on writing poems & interpreting poems for about 2 weeks.

One day I was at my auntie house with my cousins when out of nowhere my cousin started calling me names like “cow” or “pig”. These comments hurt my feelings not because of what was said but who said it. Later on that night I began writing my emotions in my notes app. I began to write whatever came to mind when suddenly the words began to rhyme. I realized what I was writing could be turned into a poem. I was so amazed at the fact that I could express my thoughts & emotions without having to verbalize them. From this point forward my passion for this hobby only grew & developed until eventually I began writing for fun

When I started writing poems I was only able to write for a limited amount of time due to the fact that I didn’t have much to say. When I turned 13 all of this changed. From Dec 2023-July 25 (throughout this timeline I was between the ages 13-14) I have gone through some of the biggest obstacles & changes one can only imagine. Whether it was my mental health, puberty, school life or experiencing new emotions all of these things combined are what inspired me to begin writing and expressing my deep intimate thoughts in the form of writing. Writing is how I escape from the world and reality. This interest can be very beneficial and here’s why.

1)When writing for fun you have no limits nor restrictions. This being said you can write when you want, how you want, what you want & so on and forth. The purpose is your capable of demonstrating your original thoughts and assimilating a new version of yourself.

2)As I mentioned earlier, writing can be used to assist those who might have difficulties when it comes to communicating how they feel aloud or to those who just need to get the weight of their chest of all these emotions.

3)Writing can help when it comes to career goals as well.If you decide to follow a journalist, editor or poet career path in the future, being acknowledged with the 4 steps of the writing process is key to becoming a successful writer.

Writing can be complicated at times if you don’t know what to write. When writing you want to think about your life. When I say your life I mean your experiences, your goals, your achievements, your passions & your interests/hobbies.Simply taking these topics into consideration can influence ideas for you to write about. Being introduced to poetry opened up a whole new world for me.When I write I don’t think, speak or feel I just write. When you write without thinking this gives you the opportunity to explore new thoughts and creativity. In the future my goal is to explore the different genres of poetry as well as exploring other writing forms such as creative writing and essays.

Writing tips

  1. Practice Writing consistently
  2. Develop your writing style
  3. Get creative
  4. Develop ideas to write about
  5. Writing takes time and effort ( don’t give up easily!!!)

In conclusion, writing has many benefits like preparing you for the future, allowing you to learn who you are & allowing you to express your emotions. Writing comes in all forms and it’s up to you to discover the most efficient one for you. The purpose of this blog was to inspire readers to explore something new & see how writing affects you & the benefits but also obstacles that come with it.
