“Invincible” is an incredible show. It’s one that I recommend to everybody who loves superheroes or action movies/shows. It’s an animated TV show on Amazon Prime, it follows the main character “Mark,” also known as “Invincible,” throughout his journey as that superhero. It’s incredibly well written which is one of the main reasons why I recommend watching the show. The show isn’t just about Mark beating up the bad guy and saving the day. Mark throughout the series, faces villains and situations where he is almost killed. It shows the viewer that Mark isn’t “Invincible” and that there are consequences to his actions.
The villains aren’t just there for no reason, there’s a story behind them that led them to becoming who they are. One example of this is a villain named “Powerplex.” He’s shown to be a regular citizen up until one day during one of Invincible’s many battles, Invincible destroys part of his city and unintentionally kills some of Powerplex’s family. Driven by rage and grief, Powerplex tries everything he can to get rid of Invincible, to “make him pay for what he did”. This leads Powerplex into involving his wife and child into a scheme that would kill Invincible. During this scheme Powerplex is so blinded by rage and hate that his powers spiral out of control and kill his wife and child. “Invincible” shows viewers that the villains are still human, they can be sympathized with, they face trauma, a byproduct of what superheroes can do when they are trying to save lives.
The show also handles mature themes really well, some of these themes include power, responsibility, family, morality, and destiny. Destiny is something that Mark struggles with throughout the show, he is told that he was meant to conquer the world but he refuses to. As result, he is beaten down in an attempt to make him submit and conquer Earth yet every time he survives he asks himself whether he can change the fact that he was meant to conquer Earth. The show also handles violence well, it doesn’t show fight scenes just for shock value it shows these scenes to remind the viewer that although Mark is a hero he still causes the destruction of cities, and families, that although he is a hero his actions still have a massive impact.
Dialogue is also well written and gives the viewer an insight into what the character is thinking and who they really are. When Mark’s father (Nolan) tries making him conquer Earth, Mark refuses, as a result Nolan starts beating him up, during this fight Nolan says “You want to die for this planet? Fine. What’s 17 more years? I can always start again” showing that Nolan is willing to destroy his family to conquer Earth. When Mark is finally defeated by Nolan he is asked “What will you have in 500 years?” Mark responds with “You, Dad. I still have you.” showing that although his father betrayed him he still loves him, causing Nolan to stop and leave. When a government official in charge of superheroes (Cecil) is faced with multiple world-ending threats he says “I’ve had to make decisions no one should have to make. You think you’re a hero, but you’ve never had to protect the whole world.” showing that he is willing to do almost anything if it means the survival of humanity, it asks the viewer, “would you rather do what’s necessary or do what feels right?”
In conclusion, I believe that you should start watching “Invincible”. Whether it be dialogue, story, or action this show has a little something for everybody. Not to mention that there are multiple top rated episodes in the show, some breaking records and becoming top rated episodes in TV history. I hope you do watch the show, because it’s an amazing show with a large audience and the bigger that audience gets, the better the show becomes.
